What is a Thailand retirement visa?
A retirement visa is a visa for foreigners aged 50 and above who wish to reside long term in the Kingdom of Thailand after retiring from work. Applicants must provide financial evidence of a stable income or savings to be approved by the Immigration Office, under the Non-Immigrant Visa categories O, O-A and O-X.
It is granted for one year at a time and is renewable indefinitely as long as you continue to meet the financial and insurance requirements. Holders may live in Thailand permanently, but may not work or take up any occupation.

Frequently asked questions
How old do I have to be to get a Thailand retirement visa?
You must be a foreign national aged 50 years or older on the date you submit the application.
How much money do I need in the bank?
For a Non-O or Non-OA retirement visa you need 800,000 THB on deposit in a Thai bank account, held for at least three months before you apply. Alternatively you can show a monthly income or pension of at least 65,000 THB over the past 12 months. For the Non-OX visa the figures are 3,000,000 THB on deposit or 100,000 THB monthly income.
Can I apply for a retirement visa while I am already in Thailand?
Yes. You first enter on a 90-day Non-Immigrant O visa, or convert from a tourist visa or visa-exempt entry, then apply at the Immigration Bureau office covering your place of residence. You normally need to have been in Thailand around 60 days first, and you must apply at least 15 days before your current permission to stay expires.
Am I allowed to work on a retirement visa?
No. Retirement visa holders may not work or engage in any occupation within the Kingdom of Thailand. If you want to work you need a different visa category plus a work permit — we can advise on that separately.
Do I need health insurance?
Yes. Foreign nationals must hold health insurance that covers the whole period of stay. The required coverage level depends on the visa category, so confirm the current figures with us before you buy a policy.
What is the 90-day report?
Anyone staying in Thailand on a permission of one year or more must report their address to their local immigration office every 90 days. You can report 14 days early or up to 7 days late. Reporting more than 90 days late means attending in person and paying a 2,000 THB fine.
How long does the whole process take?
Once your documents are complete, immigration processing takes 1–3 working days per stage. End to end, most clients have their visa within about 3–4 weeks.
